Transportational Cyclic Steps Created by Submarine Long-Runout Turbidity Currents

چکیده

In recent years, it has become a common understanding among researchers that one of the significant agents for forming variety submarine geomorphologies is turbidity currents travel long distances, so-called long-runout currents. this study, we present mathematical model formation cyclic steps due to based on assumption highly concentrated layer near bottom achieves an equilibrium state. The uses four governing equations: momentum equation, continuity diffusion/dispersion equation suspended sediment, and sediment bed (the Exner equation). We simplify equations by ignoring entrainment from ambient water since there distinct density interface above lower determine dimensions solution. Agreement between predictions field observations turns out be reasonable.

Numerical simulations of transportational cyclic steps

A numerical model that couples water flow and sediment transport over a non-cohesive bed is developed to simulate the initiation and evolution of transportational cyclic steps. Transportational cyclic steps are periodic bedforms characterized by corresponding hydraulic jumps that form when a supercritical flow erodes and deposits bottom sediments on a steep bed. The flow transition at the hydra...

First wide-angle view of channelized turbidity currents links migrating cyclic steps to flow characteristics

Field observations of turbidity currents remain scarce, and thus there is continued debate about their internal structure and how they modify underlying bedforms. Here, I present the results of a new imaging method that examines multiple surge-like turbidity currents within a delta front channel, as they pass over crescent-shaped bedforms. Seven discrete flows over a 2-h period vary in speed fr...

Turbidity Currents and Seabed Morphology

Our main goal is to assess the hydrodynamics of turbidity currents and mudflows and their ability to produce morphological features such as ripples, dunes, antidunes and gullies along their paths. Of particular interest is to elucidate the role played by turbidity currents on the inception of submarine channels and canyons. To this end, understanding the mechanics of sediment erosion, including...

Turbidity Currents and Their Deposits

The article surveys the current state of our understanding of turbidity currents, with an emphasis on their fluid mechanics. It highlights the significant role these currents play within the global sediment cycle, and their importance in environmental processes and in the formation of hydrocarbon reservoirs. Events and mechanisms governing the initiation of turbidity currents are reviewed, alon...

Rip Currents Onshore Submarine Canyons

The long-term goals of this research are to understand the dynamics of rip currents generated by largescale variations in alongshore pressure gradients and wave forcing, and the impact of rip currents on nearshore bathymetry. These goals will be accomplished collaboratively using field observations and numerical models, and will be pursued as part of the Nearshore Canyon Experiment (NCEX) sched...
